3D films have generated some interest today. Everyone talks about it. Hollywood has put in large amounts of money into making them and 3D films have resulted in mostly positive responses from patrons.

What is so special about 3D films anyway? 3D films make use of stereoscopic application of science, which makes the optical illusion of depth perception, by showing two slightly varying images to both eyes. One might watch a 3D movie and have no idea about the extensive work and money poured into making one. Some people may not know it, but creating a 3D movie is a lot of hard work. Yes, making films involves a lot of hard work, but 3D films may just be harder to make. Also, 3D films demand the spending of a lot of money, A LOT, much more than the usual feature film.

The most expensive 3D film to make so far is the film, The Polar Express, which 170 million USD. This is followed by Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which cost 137 million USD. Shark Tale ranked as the tenth most expensive as it cost 75 million USD.

How the public receives 3D films says a lot about the quality of the movie. If there are a lot of positive feedbacks, then the creators of the movie should be quite proud of themselves. If the negative feedbacks overshadow the positive ones, then, well, you get the idea. A 3D movie review can also help make predictions about the number of patrons that will shell oout money just to see the movie. If there are a lot of positive responses, then most likely, a lot of moviegoers will go see the 3D film. If it is otherwise, then there would only be a small number of people in the movie house viewing the film, making the movie a big flop.

A 3D movie review is assessment and analysis of films, and can be categorized into two: journalistic criticism and academic criticism. Academic criticism is done by film critics who take an academic approach towards films. This is also known as film theory or film studies. Journalistic criticism involves a 3D movie review that is made by film critics working for newspapers, magazines and the like. This also includes online film review websites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, which collects movie reviews from various film critics to assign a certain score. Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most known online film review websites.

Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten tomatoes is a film review website that compiles reviews from various film critics that are active members of writing guilds or film critic associations. The name “rotten tomatoes” came from the historical cliché of throwing tomatoes and other vegetables at a bad artist. Films with positive reviews of 60% or more are classified as “fresh” while those with positive responses much less than that are categorized as “rotten”. There is an annual “Golden Tomato Award” that is awarded to the highest rating film of the year.
