Bar Girls: Friendly if faulty romantic comedy with a twirl: most of its chief characters are lesbians who assemble at L.A.s Gal Bar. Prospero’s Books: At first challenging although unsatisfactory adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, with most of the discussion mentioned by 87-year-old Gielgud (in the role of Prospero); the other performers are little more than an add on, and there’s a mindboggling portion of nudity. Stuffed with shocking, layered imagery, attractive production layout and cinematography, which tend to reduce the impact of the discussion. Pleasure can rely on your patience for Greenaway’s approach to the material. Cast includes John Gielgud, Michael Clark, Michel Blanc, Isabelle Pasco, and Tom Bell. (129 minutes, 1991)

The Abdication: A slow pace documentary-drama of that tells the story of Sweden’s Queen Christina who leaves her thrown and converts to Catholicism. (93 minutes, 1996)

Genealogies of a Crime: Deneuve is beaming in a twin role as the barrister for and sufferer of a strange youthful gentleman who’s implicated of killing his psychiatrist mothers sibling once she supposedly subjected him to drastic mind-command remedies. Well-performed although conceited, deliberately perplexing blend of puzzle, satire, and surrealism; hoaxed up with pointless flashbacks within flashbacks and other narrative and graphic gimmicks. Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli, Melvil Poupaud, Andrzej Seweryn, and Bernadette LaFont. (114 minutes, 1997)

Dutchman: Cast includes Shirley Horseman, AI Freeman, Jr. 2-personality allegory. This is loosely based on LeRoi Jones’s play, of disagreement between sadistic off-white trollop Horseman and ignorant black Freeman in a subway automobile. Uneasy and well performed, although contrived. T. D-Battle SEE: Dragon Battles (55 minutes, 1966)
