Automatic Identification System
Nowadays, various modern marine equipment and devices are being used on ships, boats, yachts, and even private vessels. Marine equipment such as the Raymarine AIS has an important role in keeping the boat safe during a water journey.
An Automatic Identification System, also referred to as vessel tracking system, is an important tool to have in boats. An AIS’s main purpose is ensuring the safety of the ship. Since the invention of radar, the AIS has been considered the next most important equipment that help ensures sea safety. An AIS is helpful in tracking any possible sea dangers. It traces the location of other ships or vessels within the area. It is necessary to know about other sea vessels beforehand to avoid mishaps and collisions. Oftentimes, people at the ship’s helm have difficulty seeing other ships. Some of the reasons include fog, rain and distance. Night navigation also makes it hard to locate other ships. In addition, shadows and radar blind arcs may also cause difficulties in locating other marine vessels.
Vessel tracking system instruments such as the Raymarine AIS is used to locate other sea vessels. This type of device constantly communicates with other AIS marine vessels within range; it exchanges identification data, course, position as well as speed of ships. It works by integrating data from a VHF transceiver system and Global Positioning System (or GPS) receiver.
International Maritime Organization or IMO’s International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is one to realize the essence of AIS in ensuring marine navigation safety. Installing an AIS in international voyaging ships as well as all passenger ships is a strict requirement of this organization. However, although Automatic Identification System is an important tool in ensuring marine safety, it still has some limitations in its radio characteristics. For instance: An AIS is a piece of marine equipment that helps avoid collision by being a lookout. It can also determine the possibility of danger and the risks involved. It is not used as an automated collision avoidance system.
Despite a few drawbacks, an AIS instrument is still a good help to sea adventurers and sailors. These are only some of the many benefits you can get from a vessel tracking system. Marine instruments such as the Raymarine AIS are important to have in ships because they do not only make navigation more efficient; they also help ensure the safety of the marine vessel and all the people aboard.
