I’ve been itching to get rid of Comcast cable for a long time. The issue is they suck you in with their packages that include telepone, internet, and cable TV service. When you try to disconnect one, you lose the savings of the bundle.

But the cable TV setup just needs to go, as the channel selection and quality is below par. There is so much discussion these days about HD, there just wasn’t much choice with Charter cable television. So I started researching who else was providing service in my area.

I am fortunate to be one of the folks who have a few options. Unlike many folks who can only select from just the cable company or DIRECTV satellite service, I have another option in this region. The phone company in this area has been enhancing their network. So now I have an additional player with AT&T and their U-Verse service.

That doesn’t mean of course I won’t have similar issues. It could place me in the same situation as with the cable TV company, because phone guys want customers to bundle their television setup with high speed and voice service. If the service works out well, customers will be pleased. But if its not you are in the same circumstance that I’m in now with the cable operator.  So I’m doing a side by side comparison, cable vs Direct TV so I make the right choice.

The reviews I found on the internet are pretty good on telecom television service. Because it is new, there is sometimes a learning curve with a new technology like this, and some customers write poor reviews. Some of those reviews are the quite amusing, simply for the reason people decide to write a bad review on their horrible experience and share it on the web. They badmouth the company like it is some huge conspiracy to make the customer unhappy, like the company does not want our money!

Another option I’m seriously considering is of course satellite television. Because we have four television watchers in our house, we usually buy a premium TV package. The satellite companies seem to be pretty even, as the Premier DirecTV package and the Dish Network Everything package are both right around $100 a month. Sure that’s fairly pricey for cable TV, but if you make the comparison with treating your family to dinner and a show, the entertainment value is comparable. Some of my family speak Spanish, so the DIRECTV Mas programming package looks pretty good. The great thing is that there are plenty of Direct TV opinions to help me decide which direction to take.
