Hazel Blears’ Brooch Provide Free Publicity for Nick Hubbard
Ever since her resignation just a day before the local elections, Hazel Blears’ fashion has been widely reported. The item that caused so much news was her brooch.
When the former MP resigned, she wore a brooch that featured the words “rocking the boat” which was exactly what she was doing at the time, resigning just a day before the local elections. This is why it has become such a popular story with the press, was share aware that she was wearing that item and if it would make such a statement, if she was aware, was her resignation a challenge to Gordon Brown.
For one gentleman, this political news story has proven to be a great boost in business. That man is the designer of Hazel Blears’ brooch, Nick Hubbard.
I don’t think Mr Hubbard would have ever have thought that a piece of his jewellery would ever be analysed so much in the news, newspapers and radio. The entire incident with the brooch has provided Mr Hubbard with a huge amount of free publicity that any PR firm would dream of getting.
Mr Hubbard and his wife Jean run their own jewellery business in the Staffordshire Countryside. He designs and creates every piece of his jewellery using traditional methods and local materials. As for the brooch in question, it’s a piece of silver jewellery made from oxidized silver, gold and hand painted details. It features the words “rocking the boat” around the edge of the brooch with a cat and a dog in a bog within the center of the brooch. There is a small lever on the side, which when triggered, the boat rocks from side to side.
Mr Hubbard doesn’t believe that she was unaware of the political statement that the jewellery suggested: “I think her intentions were clear”, and really, if she didn’t want to create a statement, she could have worn a different piece, like some amethst jewellery.
There have been a number of well known people seen wearing jewellery items from Mr Hubbard. Spanning his 30 year career, Mr Hubbard has sold items of jewellery to Jill Murphy, Virginia McKenna, Frances De La Tour, Roddy Doyle, Sue Townsend, Alison Weir and Nicholas Hytner.
